The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has forced the closure of the Carmi municipal swimming pool for the 2020 summer season. The announcement was made Tuesday night by Mayor Jeff Pollard during the regular City Council meeting.
“With all of the Tri-State pools closing for the summer due to the pandemic, we have been in contact with the Illinois Department of Public Health,” Mayor Pollard said. “They have strongly urged the City of Carmi to do the same. This summer, our pool will be closed but on the positive side, it will give us time to do long overdue repairs and be ready for next year.”
The pandemic has also forced the cancellation of this year’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration. The decision to cancel the show came after discussions between city officials and the Chamber of Commerce. Regarding Summer Recreational League, officials were told that the program should begin as scheduled starting June 1 unless otherwise directed by Health Department orders.
Mayor Pollard says his goal is to reopen the Burrell Woods campground June 1 with some restrictions. Officials say social distancing could be accomplished by closing every other campsite.
Mayor Pollard also told aldermen that he has sent letters to Governor JB Pritzker, Representative Darren Bailey and Senator Dale Righter in support of getting Carmi businesses reopened.
