A rural Carmi man died Wednesday after the lawn mower he was riding overturned into a water filled creek.  Stanley Lewis, 68 was pronounced dead around 10 a.m. Wednesday by White County Coroner Chris Marsh.

The scene of the accident was just off of Illinois route 14 not far from the Illinois State Police Post west of Carmi. Coroner Marsh said a motorist traveling north on a nearby county road spotted the overturned mower in the creek and alerted authorities.

Lewis had been the longtime caretaker for the late Ron Absher's sprawling property west of Carmi. While coroner Marsh said it appeared Lewis drowned after being pinned beneath the overturned mower, his investigation continues.

The White County Sheriff's Department and other local emergency agencies assisted at the accident scene.
