A high speed crash in a residential section of Carm claimed the lives of two young White County men Monday night. The victims have been identified as James Irvin Grant, 29 of Carmi and Brandon Lee Rhodes, 21, a Grayville native.
Carmi City Police received a 911 call of a major traffic accident at 5th and Fackney Streets in Carmi shortly before 9:30 Monday night. When officers arrived, they found a 2006 Pontiac G-6 had crashed into a tree with both victims still inside. White Coroner Chris Marsh said both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation reveals the driver, James Grant was traveling southbound on 5th street at a very high rate of speed. Witnesses told police that Grant's car failed to slow down for the stop sign at 5th and Sycamore and continued southbound before running off the west side of the roadway and crashing into a tree. Witnesses estimated the car was traveling at a speed greater than 100 mph when it impacted the tree.
