Police in Carmi are investigating the shooting death of an elderly couple. Shortly after 11:30 Friday morning, Carmi City Police were called to 1604 Hillcrest Avenue in Carmi where the bodies of a husband and wife were found. The identity of the victims has not been released pending notification of relatives and further investigation, said Carmi Police Chief Jason Carter.
Chief Carter identified the female victim as 72-years-old and her 71-year-old husband. Chief Carter said the couple's daughter made the discovery and alerted authorities.
Illinois State Police Crime Scene investigators have been called to the victim's home to process evidence. The bodies were removed from the home Friday afternoon and taken to a nearby hospital by the White County Coroner's Office for X-rays and additional forensic testing.
White County Sheriff Doug Maier and Chief Carter both stated that the incident appears to have been domestic in nature and there is currently no danger to the public.
As of around 4 p.m. Friday, the scene was still active with authorities continuing their investigation.
