Fire Guts Historic Carmi Home


A stubborn fire gutted a 2-story frame home on Stewart Street Tuesday night. The fire at 209 Stewart Street was reported shortly before 6:30, when a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the roof of the structure.

The home, owned by Suzanne Brown of Carmi, was unoccupied and was under renovation. Because of heavy smoke and intense heat, Carmi firemen were driven out of the house, resulting in a call for mutual aid from several area departments.

Due to the height of the house, ladder trucks from Fairfield and  Shawneetown were summonsed along with mutual aid from Norris City, Enfield, Crossville and Ridgway.  No one was injured and firemen battled the fire for more than three hours.
