Walter David Bertram, 41 of Thompsonville, Ill. has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a 2019 burglary of the Pattiki Coal Mine south of Carmi.
The sentence was handed down Monday, Sept. 28 in White County Circuit Court in Carmi.
In addition to prison time, Bertram has been ordered to pay his share of $30,160 restitution to White County Coal. His co-defendant in the case, Danny L. Stephens, 40 of Concord drew a seven year prison sentence for his role in the heist. Stephens was sentenced in July of last year.
Police records reveal the two burglarized the coal mine on two occasions – June 24, 2019 and July 14, 2019. Coal mine officials said the intruders used a cutting torch to access tool lockers and at least three other buildings on the property. An ATV was also taken during one of the burglaries.
In addition to six years in prison, the judge ordered Bertram to serve another two years of parole once he gets out of prison. The judge gave Bertram credit for 18 days he spent in the county jail awaiting the disposition of his case.
