One Dead in Grayville Shooting

A Grayville man is dead following an early morning shooting incident on Sycamore Street in Grayville.  The victim has been identified as Tommy “TJ” Burns, 40 of Grayville.  The man suspected of killing Burns has been identified as Steve Schmittler, 56 of Grayville.

Officials said the two men were at a residence at 201 Sycamore Street shortly after midnight Sunday morning when an argument broke out.  Schmittler is accused of pulling a handgun and shooting Burns.

Burns died at the scene.  Schmittler has been taken into custody and is being held in the White County jail at Carmi pending charges to be filed in Edwards County Circuit Court. Edwards County State's Attorney Eric St. Ledger is working with investigators in obtaining search warrants as part of the ongoing investigation.

Illinois State Police detectives along with Crime Scene investigators were at the scene for hours Sunday morning, gathering evidence.  Edwards County Coroner Mark Curtis has also joined the investigation.  Curtis said an autopsy will be performed, but a time and date has not been established.

At the time of the alleged shooting, Schmittler was on probation from an Edwards County felony theft case. He was placed on two years of probation in March of this year.
