Saturday evening would find the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Fighting Cardinal basketball team traveling to Christopher once again with hopes of claiming third place in the Christopher Turkey Tournament and completing the 8-team tournament with a 2-1 record. This time, the Fighting Cardinals would be up against New Athens. First quarter was very balanced on both ends of the court but as time would wind down, the Fighting Cardinals were able to cling to a two points advantage, 13-11. This lead would swell to 12 points at halftime following a 15-5 run by NCOE. With the game appearing to be in control, the Fighting Cardinals seemed to take their foot off of the accelerator, and this did not work out very well at all for NCOE. In the third quarter of play, New Athens would come alive and find momentum on their side as they went on a 10-4 run to narrow the NCOE lead to just six points heading into the final stanza of play. This fourth and final quarter would find New Athens cutting into the NCOE lead even more to only trail by five points. With time winding down, New Athens was forced to foul and this was a very good strategy as NCOE, using a offense for defense game plan, could not take advantage of the free points converting just 6 of 22 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter alone. Despite leaving 18 points on the floor (15-33 free throw shooting), the Fighting Cardinals were able to hang on for the 47-41 victory and capture 3rd place in the tournament. Ty Money would finish the game with 14 points followed closely by CJ Richardson with 12 points. Others scoring in the game were Trey Simmons eight points, Joe Melton seven points, Eli Brown five points, and Preston Long one point. NCOE's Ty Money and Joe Melton were selected to the All Tournament Team. NCOE (2-1) will be back in action Tuesday, December 3, when they travel to Crab Orchard and again Friday, December 6, when they play host to Thompsonville.
