PUTTING THE BALL IN PLAY.

Senior Julia Smith puts the ball into play during the Fairfield-CWC softball game on Tuesday, April 9, at Archie Brown Memorial Field. The Lady Mules won the game 9-5 in nine innings.

Chris Shelton’s Lady Bulldog softball team dropped two BDCE contests to Fairfield over the past week.

Fairfield 9, CWC 5 – 9 innings (Tue., April 9)

Fairfield rallied from two down in the top of the seventh inning push the contest into extra innings at Archie Brown Memorial Field, only to push four runs across the plate in the top of the ninth to secure the victory over CWC.

The game did not see the first hit until the top of the fourth inning, where the Lady Mules took an early 1-0 lead after their leadoff hitter reached on a single and came around to score after the Lady Bulldogs committed two errors.

The maroon and white regained their focus in the bottom of the frame.  With bases loaded and two outs, CWC scored on a walk, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Allison Shelton to take a 4-1 advantage.

After Fairfield picked up two tallies in the top of the fifth, the Lady Canines answered with a run in their half of the inning without the use of a hit to make the score 5-3.

The game appeared to be in hand in the top of the seventh, as the Lady Mules had a runner on second with two outs. However, Fairfield put together back-to-back singles to tie the game 5-5, forcing extra innings.

After a quick eighth frame, the Lady Mules jumped on CWC in the ninth. Three Lady Bulldog errors, a single, and a double led to a four-run outburst to finalize the scoring.

Shelton and Carlee Hart had two hits apiece to lead the maroon and white at the plate. Shelton added a team-high two RBIs, also.

Liberty Smith was the hard-luck loser in the circle. The freshman went the distance, surrendering seven hits, walking four and striking out four.

Fairfield 8, CWC 5(Thur., April 11)

After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead with one inning in the book, CWC (3-6, 2-2 BDCE) watched as the hosts went on a 7-1 run over the next three innings to sweep the Black Diamond Conference East series.

The Lady Canines looked to rally in the top of the fifth inning, trailing Fairfield (11-5, 2-2) by a score of 7-2. Makynna Shaffer and Julia Smith forced two Lady Mule miscues, resulting in three tallies to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Unfortunately for CWC, they would go hitless for the rest of the contest, while Fairfield added an extra insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.

In addition, the Lady Bulldogs could not capitalize on seven total errors by Fairfield for the contest.

Mariah VanMatre (double), J. Smith, and Kendall Rooney had one hit each. Emily White had the only run batted in.

L. Smith was the losing pitcher of record, surrendering eight hits and four walks, while striking out five in six innings of work.
